Who Are Westlife?
Westlife are one of Ireland’s most successful pop groups, forming in 1998 and going on to become one of the biggest boybands of the late 1990s. The group is currently made up of Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne and Mark Feehily, although the 25th Anniversary World Tour will see Shane, Kian and Nicky perform as a trio as Mark takes a break from live performances.
The story of Westlife began in Sligo, Ireland, where Kian, Mark and Shane grew up and went on to form a group called Six as One in 1997, which was later renamed IOYOU.
After Mark’s mother contacted Irish music manager Louis Walsh, who was managing Boyzone at the time, Walsh took an interest in the group. Simon Cowell then became involved, with auditions taking place in Dublin and several changes made to the original group. Nicky Byrne and Brian McFadden were then brought into the line-up, with McFadden later leaving Westlife in 2004.
Their early career quickly gathered momentum after opening for Boyzone and Backstreet Boys concerts in Dublin and releasing their debut single, Swear It Again, in 1999. The song went straight to Number 1 in both UK and Ireland, immediately establishing Westlife as a new exciting name in pop music.
