Manchester United Champions League Draw 2026/27: Opponents & Fixtures
Manchester United have discovered their opponents for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase, with some huge European nights awaiting Michael Carrick’s side on their return to the competition.
United will face eight different opponents during the league phase, playing four fixtures at Old Trafford and four away from home as they look to secure a place in the knockout stages.
Bayern Munich headline the teams travelling to Manchester, while United will also welcome Roma, RB Leipzig and Sabah to Old Trafford. Away from home, trips to Atlético Madrid, Sporting CP, Villarreal and Como await.

Manchester United Champions League Draw
Manchester United face a fascinating set of opponents on their return to the Champions League, with Bayern Munich among the headline visitors to Old Trafford.
Manchester United home opponents:

United will therefore face clubs from Germany, Italy, Azerbaijan, Spain and Portugal as part of their eight-game league phase campaign.
The exact dates and kick-off times for each fixture are still to be confirmed, with UEFA due to announce the complete league phase schedule following the draw.

Manchester United v Bayern Munich
The standout fixture of United’s draw is undoubtedly the visit of Bayern Munich.
Manchester United and Bayern share plenty of Champions League history, most famously the dramatic 1999 final in Barcelona when two stoppage-time goals completed one of the most memorable comebacks in European football.
Their latest meeting will bring another of Europe’s biggest clubs to Old Trafford and should be one of United’s most anticipated home fixtures of the season.

Manchester United v Roma
United will also welcome Roma to Old Trafford.
The two clubs have met several times in European competition, including United’s famous 7-1 Champions League victory at Old Trafford in April 2007.
Roma should provide another significant test for Carrick’s side and another major European occasion in Manchester.
Manchester United v RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig complete the trio of established European opponents heading to Old Trafford.
United and Leipzig last met during the 2020/21 Champions League group stage, with both clubs winning their respective home fixtures.
United will be hoping home advantage proves decisive once again when the Bundesliga side return to Manchester.

Manchester United v Sabah
Azerbaijani side Sabah complete Manchester United’s four league phase home opponents.
It will provide a very different challenge to the meetings with Bayern, Roma and Leipzig, but with every result contributing towards one overall Champions League table, United will know the importance of collecting points at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s Biggest Champions League Fixtures
Bayern Munich’s visit to Old Trafford is the obvious headline fixture, but United’s Champions League draw contains several significant tests.
The trip to Atlético Madrid should provide one of their toughest away assignments. Atlético have established a formidable European reputation and playing in Madrid will present a very different challenge to a Champions League night at Old Trafford.
Sporting CP and Villarreal add two more potentially difficult away fixtures, while the home meetings with Roma and RB Leipzig could prove important as the league table begins to take shape.
With only eight league phase games determining who progresses automatically, enters the play-offs or exits the competition, there is considerably less room for error than under the traditional Champions League group format.
What Does the Champions League Draw Mean for Manchester United?
Manchester United head into the 2026/27 campaign with expectations high following a significant period of change at Old Trafford.
The return of Champions League football adds another challenge to a season in which United will also be looking to compete at the top end of the Premier League.
Carrick’s side will have to balance major domestic fixtures with trips across Europe, making squad depth and consistency increasingly important as the season progresses.
Home form could prove particularly important. United have avoided some difficult European away trips against their biggest-name opponents, with Bayern Munich, Roma and RB Leipzig all having to visit Old Trafford.

How Does the Champions League League Phase Work?
The Champions League league phase features 36 teams competing in a single league table.
Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, with four fixtures at home and four away.
Once all eight games have been completed:
- Teams finishing 1st–8th progress directly to the Round of 16.
- Teams finishing 9th–24th enter the knockout phase play-offs.
- Teams finishing 25th–36th are eliminated from European competition.

When Are the 2026/27 Champions League Fixtures?
Although the draw has determined each club’s eight opponents and whether they will play them at home or away, the exact fixture schedule and kick-off times have not yet been confirmed.
UEFA has confirmed that the full fixture list will be announced no later than Saturday 29 August 2026.
The league phase will then be played across eight matchdays:

The pre-match meal was a four-course affair, which was pretty good, but since we were running late, they graciously accommodated our last course during halftime (To make sure we didn’t miss a single moment). The hosts and hostesses in the lounge were incredibly courteous and responsive, even though the lounge was extremely busy.. the atmosphere in the stand was still really good. 😅 The game was a real thriller, and Manchester United clinched the victory in the 97th minute!
