Deftones’ most popular album is ‘White Pony’, released in 2000. It is widely considered to be their best-selling album and a definitive piece of work in their career, receiving platinum certification from the RIAA. However, Around the Fur is also incredibly popular and a fan favourite for many.

Deftones rose to fame through extensive touring and word-of-mouth promotion, which helped them build a dedicated early fan base. Their distinctive sound caught industry attention and, combined with the success of their early releases, secured them a major record deal, propelling them into wider recognition.

Lead guitarist, Stephen Carpenter, created the band’s name by combining the hip-hop slang term ‘def’ with the suffix ‘-tones’. This was a popular trend in naming for bands in the 1950s. The result created a name that reflected both his love of rap and a nod to older music groups, and it’s often interpreted as a playful twist on ‘tone deaf.’
